The Lodger: A Story of the London Fog

In London, several women are brutally murdered. The policeman Joe is scheduled for the fall. At the same time a sinister stranger moves into the home of Joe's girlfriend, Daisy, as a lodger. The stranger falls in love with Daisy and they become a couple, much to the displeasure of Joe. He suspects the mysterious stranger as the murderer. The stranger gets more and more into the twilight and is chased by the mob. Joe catches the real killer red handed. At the last second he can save the stranger from the mob, which wants to lynch him. It turns out that his sister was among the victims of the killer. The Lodger is now considered one of the great masterpieces of Alfred Hitchcock. It is undoubtedly his best silent movie. Plot structure, subtile tension and uncertainty about the true identity of the hero, these are all elements recurring in the later films of Alfred Hitchcock. Hitchcock did this movie for the first time with an absolute superstar, Ivor Novello. This destroyed the original intent of Hitchcock for an open end. Movie star Novello could not be a potential murderer. So the script was changed accordingly, which did no harm to the dark atmosphere.
