Deathcore, metalcore, grind, hardcore… Whatever you choose to label “Impending Doom” they’re certainly awesome. I’ll be the first to admit, bits of this album REALLY remind of “Plagues” by The Devil Wears Prada, (who is actually one of my favorite bands.) However, “Impending Doom” definitely takes the heavier stance and is completely devoid of clean singing and/or synths. (Take that as a warning, if you don’t want to be pummeled with 40 minutes of bellowing, blasting and riffage… this album is not for you.) All of that being said, there is a distinctly melodic voice in all of this craziness that really stands out on most tracks. “Anything Goes” is a great example of a gothic melody layered over the top of crunchy guitar chords with a huge percussive foundation of growling and double bass drumming.
I don’t have any reservations in recommending this album to even the most skeptical death metal fans! I’d also like to point out (to any concerned parents or guardians) that this album may be titled and illustrated quite darkly, but is actually a very positive album. There is nothing lyrically that will affect teenagers negatively… The band is Christian, so that pretty much steers the entire album to a very clean and positive place.
