I’m not Christian. The majority of “Christian pop” makes me gag at the unoriginality and the figurative beating over the head with the message. So it was with some surprise that when Fireflight’s “Unbreakable” came up in my Pandora/Within Temptation stream and I was rocking out to it I learned that they’re a Christian band. Pandora supplied a few more songs and I ended up buying the CD.
Fireflight doesn’t have the dirge-like grind of Evanescence nor the teen angst of Paramore, the bands that most compare them to. Their sound is at once bright and heavy with hopeful lyrics. God is occasionally mentioned but not emphasized. Vocalist Dawn Richardson doesn’t have the strongest voice but it’s very emotional and there’s moments where she reminds me of Pat Benatar. If you’re a fan of female-fronted rock bands Fireflight is a nice surprise, and they could easily cross over into the mainstream without compromising their beliefs.
