Brutal Truth - Live in Tokyo 4th November 2011

Below is my unadulterated opinion of the Band Brutal Truth and the concert I witnessed. I do in NO WAY intend to offend hardcore Brutal Truth fans. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, especially (I'm sure you'll agree) if they have gone to the trouble of filming, editing and uploading the concert for Brutal Truth fans to enjoy. So here is my opinion. Remember, I accept that some people love this band, and I respect that. Music is a personal thing. Brutal Truth may very well mean a lot to a lot of people.... But here is my honest critique of what I experienced 4th Nov 2011. Honestly, I was hoping Brutal Truth was gonna be something amazing.... I hadn't heard them since the mid 90s but I figured a band that had come out of retirement to carry on the flame must have been a huge thing that slipped under my musical radar accidentally... So I had high hopes for the concert. Regrettably, the first thing I noticed was the drummer was a goofball (who resembled "Rimmer" off Red Dwarf) and the music was discordant and pretty rough. However, after the gig I took the time to investigate the songs they played, and the original recordings were actually good grind songs. With this information now on board, I think the horrendous mix and the guy on the left with the noise generating synthesizer had a lot to do with the lack of impact they had. The guitar is also non-existent in the mix......Suffice to say, I didn't really like what I heard, but the drummer Richard Hoak was so amusing to watch, I couldn't resist filming him. I filmed the gig until I had heard enough of the wall of overly loud bad sound and I decided to leave. I gave them 20 minutes to impress me, and I'm sad to say they failed miserably to do so. Paid 70 bucks for the ticket, so luckily Lock Up played a great set before these guys came on.. Perhaps a better sound engineer would have made them rock the building. That said, I hope brutal Truth fans enjoy it. I do confess that maybe this show is missing their appeal, because the Japanese fans really enjoyed the show and liked them a lot. Richard Hoak is damn funny to watch regardless. I do get the fact that one mans musical god is another mans pizza delivery guy. I have listened to Brutal Truth here and there since their conception - I was big into SOD and Nuclear Assault, and when Dan Lilker did the Brutal Truth thing, I checked them out imagining them to be something I would like. They never grew on me and although I respect musical diversity, it just sounds like noise to me - and that's something I never imagined myself saying. This isn't grind to me... Carcass and Napalm were grind - hell even the ORIGINAL BRUTAL TRUTH ALBUM FROM 92 was grind... . I don't know what this is meant to be, and I'm no genre enforcer by any means. It was loud, and wasn't really a tight unit like most bands i am into. The drummer was growling and at one point rolling on the floor cradling his head in his hands.... Not worth 70 bucks at the door I think... I can check out homeless nutcases for free in the park nearby without losing my hearing doing it. But then again as I said, maybe I'm missing the "point" of the music. Some people love Madonna, some people love happy hardcore, and some people love Brutal Truth, and so for them, I upload this video. Enjoy. ***Disclaimer*** "Copyright Disclaimer Under Section 107 of the US Copyright Law, allowance is made for "fair use" Fair use is a use permitted by copyright statute that might otherwise be infringing.
