Explore the underground world of Middle Eastern hardcore rock and heavy metal, a scene thriving in bedrooms and basements away from the periodic condemnations of governments and religious rulers. Metal music has been trickling into countries like Jordan, Iran and Lebanon from the West since the late 1980s, when bands like Metallica and Black Sabbath introduced power chords to the Middle East. By the 1990s the voices of authority tried to stem the musical tide in a series of Satanic Metal …

i agree with Shadi and Hail to Hani al Abadi haha i love that guy ! lol and in my opinion i think that al-jaazzera did very good job when they talked about Metal in middle east but sadly nothing will change …

    2. sheqse at 7 May 09 at 9:06 pm

btw, the only country (maybe except from dubai), that you can listen, play, have metal shops and festival of metal is israel.
nobody being arrested for listening to some kind of music, it not such a problam.
but it’s al-jaazzera, that never says the the whole true when it is consern to israel.

    3. DARK1111PRINCE at 7 May 09 at 9:06 pm

but sadly the public only look at the words without looking at the theme of the song or the album as the red might refer to love or to blood and death or pain . and sometimes it can consdered as a royal color as you can see the meanings are difrance but you cant rlly tell which one of them the writer means unless you take a look at the song theme and understand it , this things is not really famous in the araic music thats why they never thought of that but in metal many bands use it

    4. DARK1111PRINCE at 7 May 09 at 9:06 pm

as for the lyrics well in metal you need to know that most of the time the words are codes like when they say kill you they dont really mean killing you or when they say god they dont really mean god some times they reffer to those who use relgions for their own sake and dont really care what the relgion says

    5. DARK1111PRINCE at 7 May 09 at 9:06 pm

well man if they went to part of the goverments and asked them or some relgious ppl i then agree with you but to go on the street and everyone against metal ask him what he thinks that wont work at all i mean i would love to know the view of the poilce about this and the relgoius parts of the country but i cant care more or less about some guy in the street who get his thoughts and facts from what he watchs on t.v shows

    6. shadi15 at 7 May 09 at 9:06 pm

      no its not

    7. shadi15 at 7 May 09 at 9:06 pm

u know guys the Problem with metal in the Middle east is that ppl see metal here as satanic Worshiping,Drug Dealing, etc…) thay don’t know that metal is just a type of music nothing else >_>…I live in Jordan and am a metal head as well ,my Brother is the bassist of Bilocate btw xP

    8. ONLYHSV at 7 May 09 at 9:06 pm

as to why they should show these voices. well aljazeera brought up the subject of the opposition metal faces. a fair and objective analysis requires to show both sides so you can make your own picture. in the video you get the impression that the governments made a crackdown on metal simply for political reasons, which might even be true since arab governments are very oppresive. still it doesnt change the fact that lots of people oppose it from a cultural point of view.

    9. ONLYHSV at 7 May 09 at 9:06 pm

its not about music in general. i personally like house/electro but metal is more than music. if a singer starts singing so much about death and to kill your parents (not all but many metal songs) do you really think its awkword that people hesitate to accept this kind of music? often disagree with arab society because in my eyes they are often too narrowminded but there are limits.

    10. LeniMeister at 7 May 09 at 9:06 pm

i live in dubai, im 15, i listen to metal and i very accepted. the metal scene is growing, its amazing. and religion can coexist with metal by ALL MEANS!! if its metal its metal. not some fucking anti-religion revolution. \m/ stay heavy

    11. ameraudi at 7 May 09 at 9:06 pm

or even red hair, black eyeliner (NOT BLACK EYESHADOW EVEN) and a few SMALL lether bracelettes and so called main stream think I’m a devil worshiper!!! It’s all bullshit…don’t judge by appearance…I mean did you know that most of the most deadly and deranged people in history were considered COMPLETELY normal by their family and neighbours?
I listen to Metal as well as many other genre’s of music but it doesn’t mean I’m the devil or that I hate my religion, I’m a proud muslim and a do gooder!

    12. ameraudi at 7 May 09 at 9:06 pm

Why must they show the voices who appose??
It’s not JUST metalheads they appose, they appose all those who dare to be different in the slightest way.
Just as they have turned my life a living hell for not being SAUDI enough and naming me the “amrikiya”…I have tried to live by their rules and found myself miserable..Always stay true to your self and do NOT bother with mainstream approval.
I could walk into a mall with a pretty abaya and scarf but with black boots, jeans, black Tshirt, dark hair

    13. ONLYHSV at 7 May 09 at 9:06 pm

by the way. the fact that some artist even admit they are competitors to religion is totally unacceptable to most people.

    14. ONLYHSV at 7 May 09 at 9:06 pm

insulting me wont change the fact that the vast majority opposes this music. the difference between amro diab and heavy metal is that metal is not just music, its a lifestyle. besides just listen to the lyrics, theyre disgusting to most people.

aljazeera brought up the subject when they mentioned the opposition this lifestyle faces. the least thing they could have done is to show the voices who oppose them.

    15. DARK1111PRINCE at 7 May 09 at 9:06 pm

i know because i read the book , i reviewed it and i also met mark and interviewed him and talked to him and at least such ppl as the bands , mark and al jazera are doing their part of supporting metal and rock in middle east what have you done ? !!!

    16. DARK1111PRINCE at 7 May 09 at 9:06 pm

DOes it really matter ?! they didnt say that lebanon is an islamic country and they didnt say that OTV are muslims you know why because it doesnt really matter we are all in this togather
and about heavy metal islam it was called that way because the book covered a non arab countries like Pakistan so it couldnt be named as heavy metal middle east or heavy metal arab it was called heavy metal islam because those countries in the book have a great amount of muslims around them

    17. DARK1111PRINCE at 7 May 09 at 9:06 pm

are you fool or a fool or just fool ?!!
i dont remmber that anyone asked me what i think of amr ediab or any pop music this talks about metal and to show the ppl what is metal what good does it make if you went into the street and asked the public about metal most of them wont know its there and the good ones will say avril and metallica and then they will start talking how metal is bad to our countries while metal is the only honest thing that is left at this time

    18. SirEdmundBlack at 7 May 09 at 9:06 pm

Just for the record, the Metal oppression started in Lebanon in 1994, way before Egypt in 1997 or Morocco in 1998, and it was the CHURCH along with the political authority that started the oppression, because Lebanon is a mixed country with a Christian president, it is NOT a Muslim country, I do not see most Lebanese bands fit in this documentary as Heavy Metal and Islam. But this is what the media wants because its more catchy.

    19. ElmisterJorge at 7 May 09 at 9:06 pm

i really don’t like this documentary.

    20. Evatarma at 7 May 09 at 9:06 pm

Nope!! It’s only ignorante ppl who start forbidding metal and some music in general stating this act in the name of islam…
it’s why we suffer out there!

    21. sinshamsh11 at 7 May 09 at 9:06 pm

Hail METAL all over the world!!!!!!!

    22. xskaos at 7 May 09 at 9:06 pm

For metal turning the Volume down is not an option. <<< So TRUE

    23. TheRoadMurder at 7 May 09 at 9:06 pm

      nope!!

    24. ONLYHSV at 7 May 09 at 9:06 pm

weak documentary… in order to analyze and understand the opposition by the vast majority of the society towards heavy metal they should have also shown the other side, the mainstream arab who dislikes this music and what it stands for.

    25. locomotive147 at 7 May 09 at 9:06 pm

      rock the fuck on!
