For the first time in television history, a storyline on a TV series will result in a soundtrack album. After inhabitants of Tree Hill are stricken by cancer, their friends and neighbors stage a concert and create a modern-rock compilation album to raise money to fight the disease. That album, on the show and in real life, is One Tree Hill, Vol.2-and a substantial portion of its proceeds will be donated to the National Breast Cancer Association.

Rush – Roll the Bones Reviews

Rush’s return to progressive hard rock continued with Roll the Bones, though there’s still a bit of synth work (notably on the title track). The music flows like a well-oiled machine, and with Rush, that’s an asset, particularly when the material is this good. The songs are mostly up-tempo, with the intellectually oriented themes and musical structure that Rush is famous for. Especially memorable are “Dreamline,” “Face Up,” “Big Wheel,” and “Neurotica,” but everything here is good. (more…)

You may not know Nightwish yet, but the Finnish goth-orchestral-metal band is a phenomenon throughout the rest of the world. The group’s fifth album, the platinum-certified Once, hit #1 over the summer on the Pan-European charts, and stayed there for three weeks. Behind them? Alice in Chains were initially tagged with the “grunge” moniker, when in fact their haunting, ponderous sound was far closer to the progressive rock of Queensryche. Their second album, Dirt, is a moody, portentous affair, filled with occasionally inspired riffing from guitarist Jerry Cantrell and hair-tossed wailing from singer Layne Staley.
