Death Magic Doom Reviews (by Candlemass)
2009 release from one of the fastest and busiest bands in the whole Doom Metal and Metal scene, Candlemass didn’t hesitate to deliver a full-length studio album as a follow-up to last year’s massive Lucifer Rising EP and it is as sensational and striking as its title! Death Magic Doom breaks the chains of genre restrictions and serves the listener an album of monumental, breathtaking (Doom) Metal formed to perfection. This album deserves the title “classic” right from the start bec (more…)

Death Magic Doom surpasses its predecessor, King of the Gray Islands, in several aspects, songwriting is the most important. It is a release doomier with a higher concentration to achieve the atmosphere and is blessed with greater production. It is much more organic sound, offers a high degree of dynamism in the system and shows more details at once hear.
Leif Edling is one of the richest Candlemass albums to date. This is not fully on-Doom Metal. , But moves from doomy sounds more melodic phrases aggressive figures. The font is really varied and inspired. On a tune such as “If I ever die,” they weave uptempo melodic guitar rhythms with haunting harmonies and throaty singing a cappella vocals, while “Hammer of Doom” is their nod to Black Sabbath. It is peopled with innumerable elements of hellish bells chiming too slow, grinding riffs with angry vocals and abrasive Fretwork. That is quite simply the doomiest cut on the album.
The guitar is phenomenal, perhaps the best for years. Lars Johansson and Mats Björkman again prove they are the greatest guitar duo in Doom Metal. The lead solo on “The Bleeding Baroness” and “House of 1000 Voices” are trance-like. You send chills and spine, and only get better with each listen. They are very patient, so that Lowe to set the tone, as he “duels” with the guitar lines atop Edling's fat bass lines. “The Bleeding Baroness” has an indelible bass figure at the beginning, to the cultures in the middle part to a melodic chorus is incredible. Similarly, “House of 1000 Voices” provides an indestructible opening riff before the crowds go wild when Candlemass been to their shows. Since the progression riff changes, so has Lowe's sound, he sings an octave lower than usual, including a bad sound – you have made him never to sing like this before. Then there's the silvery solo; first guitar, then bass and the guitar again. Fantastic.
These two songs are by the secret hit of the album, “Demon of the Deep.” At first, this one comes in as a filler, but in time, you discover its brilliance. The sinister acoustic guitar riffs and death comprehensive a unique atmosphere. The voice at the top are strong words about. The guitar sounds like it was deliberately turn off button, which gives the piece an extra dimension. It is deep and searing. The discrete organ sounds are below the melody sublime to. All this is quite the contrast of melodic singing Passage – simply perfect.
“Dead Angel” is probably the fastest and Candlemass catchiest song ever. Although I can not say I'm fully convinced that it deserves a place on this album, the rather long instrumental break is worth it nevertheless. As the band moves to doomy sounds with “clouds of dementia,” the trade-off between guitar and bass also commands your attention as the somber acoustic intro of “My Funeral Dreams”, composed of glacial riffs mixed with fast – paced verses and an infectious chorus.
Candlemass Robert Lowe, the band shortly before recording began, King of the Gray Islands, which was the spirit of Messiah Marcolin. Although he has a good job on them, on this record, he will show his talent as a singer in a larger scale. And although he is not credited for any of the songs, it is obvious Leif Edling under the material for his style perfectly. This album sees his diverse vocal performance to date. Never before has he sung, so aggressive and melodic at the same time. He tried singing a capella, it can be deep snarling screams, he whispers – he has them all. And what he does, he gives the songs a RAW, the energy palpable. This album is his highlight from the perspective of a voice.
If you want to buy, just a Doom Metal album in 2009, it is.
