Edguy Biography

This German band play a fast type of powermetal, such as Stratovarius and Sonata Arctica. In 1996 they released their debut album, Kingdom of Madness. Already then, people saw that they were on the verge of something big. So, when they released their follow-up, Vain Glory Opera in 1998, big names such as Hansi Kürsch from Blind Guardian and Timo Tolkki from Stratovarius contributed. And, naturally, the album was a powermetal- killer! The band then consisted of; Tobias Sammet- vocals, bass and keyboards, Dirk Sauer and Jens Ludwig, guitars and Felix Bohnke on drums. But in 1999, they teamed up with bassplayer, Tobias Exxel, so that the other Tobias could concentrate more on the singing. Sammet was the man behind all the lyrics and most of the music. And just when we thought they could not improve, they released a fantastic album to prove us wrong. Theater of Salvation became album of the month in several magazines, and it sold more than 300, 000 copies worldwide. In 2000, the band brougt up some old recordings and recorded them all over again. The outcome was cool, but not the quality we are used to. Not so strange, when these songs were written by Sammet when he was only 17 years old! In late 2000, Sammet released the part one of his solo- project, Avantasia- The Metal Opera. On this album many big names contributed, like Andre Matos from Angra, Kai Hansen from Gamma Ray, and many others. Part two and three are just around the corner and I?m looking forward to them, because the first one was fantastic! Last week, Edguy released their latest album, titled Mandrake. I have only heard this album once, but I can assure you, it is great, really keeping the Edguy spirit alive. So, hats off to Tobias!
