Do You Know Any African American Females That Sing Metal?
Im black and i was going to start a metal band. And I was like it would be cool to have a black girl sing metal with me. But then when i thought about it, i have never seen or heard any black female sing metal. Maybe you can give me a band name with a girl in it that does or someone you know.
Actually, Persia White sings in a metal group and about 10 years ago there was this group out named Fishbone. Normally metal groups with African American feamle lead singers don’t get a lot of play. Record labels say they don’t know how to promote them and think that metal listeners will be skeptical or that other African Americans will not listen to metal.
all i know there is an all black girl rock band called sistas in the pit. i saw a rock band some time ago with a black girl on an advert but i can’t remember the name of the band
which are you looking for an African or a Black American singer?
Jada pinket smith
The actress, Jada Pinkett-Smith started a band several years ago, and it is a rock band. I am sure that she and Will Smith have web sites, and they would have links to her band’s website. You could probably download some of the band’s music from iTunes. Good luck!
Jada Pinkett Smith sings heavy metal in her band Wicked Wisdom. You can go to their website to sample some of their songs. Also, AOL music has a couple of songs there.
The lead singer from (now disbanded) Skunk Anansie is named Skin and she is pretty tough. Not metal but damn close. Find the song “I can dream” it’s my favorite.

Lola Olafisoye of British band ‘Chrome Hoof’. She’s got powerful voice, but they’re not exactly metal. They’re mixing metal, avangarde, jazz, disco, even some contemporary r’n'b. Totally bizarre melting pot, but great fun if you’re into more open-minded stuff. I like it.
Just google it, there should be plenty of links.
to add to the above….cree summers first band and album before street faerie was more hard rock…. also joyce kennedy from mother’s finest, they are a mixture of funk, rock, soul and heavy metal. like their album iron age…also on black radio won’t play this there are some metal songs. her voice is phenomnal…..and then there is also sophia ramos whose voice is amazing.
try black rock coalition website too. i am sure there are some on there that i have forgot as well.
I would LOVE to see an all-girl black heavy metal band as an anthithesis to the likes of Destiny’s Child etc.
There have been some black girls who have dabbled in metal – Janet Jackson is probably the best example with one of her biggest ever hits “Black Cat”, Salt-n-Pepa did a metal remix of one of their songs, and En Vogue’s “Free Your Mind” fuses R&B with some badass heavy rock that borders on metal.
Skunk Anansie weren’t metal, but “I Can Dream” and “Selling Jesus” were popular with metal and punk fans alike. I met her in 1996 when her band supported the Sex Pistols and she was absolutely tiny, but a huge personality to make up for it!
Straight line stich has a black singer ans she is damn good.
