After a ten-year wait, Iron Maiden's classic home video release Live After Death was finally released on DVD.
This is not just a straight, Barebones issue of the concert on DVD, however. This is a special edition 2 DVD set, which will also include bonus live recordings and the history of Iron Maiden Part 2 documentary, picking up the early years of follow up.
      The official details:
disc containing the recording of the full 90-minute concert. Originally filmed on 35mm, the material comes alive on DVD on a visually stunning film. The disc is also two good options – the original concert audio specially mixed into 5.1 Surround Sound by Kevin Shirley, Maiden's producer since 1999, and the original stereo sound by Martin Birch, the band's producer from 1981 to 1993.
Disc two is Part 2 of “History of Iron Maiden,” on the girl story of “The Early Days” DVD, with rare and unseen bonus material in the form of behind the Iron Curtain, Rock In Rio'85, and 'Ello Texas, all in all, with a maturity of more than three hours.
The mixes several audio and new video transfer from original 35mm elements should be a fantastic DVD. While this was a long, long wait until the official DVD release, it looks like it will be worth it.
thousand Live After Death show itself was fantastic. The band plays with an amazing amount of energy, but also with great musical ability as well. The songs are classics, and the stage is one of the best from this era.
(Update: The video quality of the Live After Death concert looks better than the VHS or Laserdisc versions that I have, and the sound quality is really, really good. Remastered The stereo mix is unbelievable, “In Your Face” and is only a wall of sound. The 5.1-Remix? Meh. Kevin Shirley, the guitars too low in the mix. It is urgent, and incredibly clean, but it lacks the force of the original stereo mix. The extras are really nice. The History Part II documentary has a lot of info, and is a great continuation of the first part from the early days. in 1985 Rock in Rio, but it is a disappointment. Not because of the performance, but because the audio / video quality is so bad. The sound is a bit muddy – originally mastered on video has aged badly – but the video is really a pity. Herky jerky, nervous and Jumpy, the original Master Volume has not been properly stored and now has serious tracking issues. It's almost like watching Cloverfield. This is also bad because the band another great performance. The other extras like 'Ello Texas, and the extended version of behind the Iron Curtain are a nice premium, and an even greater value than it already is. Overall I am very happy with the set, but it is not without a few bugs. It is clearly still a “Must Have” DVD.)

I love Maiden so maybe this review is not entirely for any non Maiden fan out there.
The concert in dics one looks the same as the original footage from VHS era but audio is remastered in dolby5.

    Great for fans.
Live Afer Death is essential viewing for any true Iron maiden fan, and for good reason. The first DVD is the main feature, the epic concert in Long Beach California.

Great only if your a big fan of iron maiden
I watched the dvd and it was great music but the 80’s looked so cheesy.

  5. Hummer says:

Is this recording really 23 years old? Can it be? Has slipped away, that time is fast. Some would certainly argue the opposite is true. In fact, we all wait to get an image “clean-up and an audio enhancement device would probably say that it seems as if the wait has always or long overdue best.
But it's finally here … Live After Death on two DVD drives. Disk performance is the classic wrap-up of Iron Maiden's 1984/1985 World slavery in Long Beach, CA. This has only to go to a Maiden fan's collection. The cleaning-up, full screen picture is better than VHS, but it's still to appreciate how much better the technology is today. The audio was 5:1 and sounds fantastic. The Live After Death set list goes:
      “Intro: Churchill's Speech”
      “Aces High”
      “2 Minutes to Midnight”
      “The Trooper”
      “Revelations”
      “Flight of Icarus”
      “Rime of the Ancient Mariner”
      “Slave Power”
      “The number of the beast”
      “Hallowed Be Thy Name”
      “Iron Maiden”
      “Run To The Hills”
      “Running Free”
      “Sanctuary”
The show lasts about 90 minutes and covered a great performance, and energy, which shows a girl, was in the early days.
disc contains two much longer than the DVD jacket suggests. The DVD case, so that the disc two runs for 150 minutes, but be sure that when you use the photo gallery tour, you get 231 minutes Maiden stuff that includes:
      1) “The History of Iron Maiden Part Two” – This is billed as the follow-up to the release of 2004 The History Of Iron Maiden – Pt. 1: The Early Days , but do not expect the same kind of multi-year documentary Part 2 here. To be sure, part two is a 60-minute documentary, which only the Slave Power, or should I say, World Slavery Tour. So, if you expect (like me) that this is another multi-year documentary of girls who maybe brings us into the Janick Gers / Blaze Bayley years, you are wrong.
      2) “Behind the Iron Curtain” – about an hour in the entire length in this chapter some of the functions behind the scenes things like Maiden, making their way through Poland, Czechoslovakia, Yugoslavia and Hungary (in 1984 I think). You will also get complete live performances from:
      “Aces High”
      “The Trooper”
      “22 Acacia Avenue”
      “The number of the beast”
      “Hallowed Be Thy Name”
      “2 Minutes to Midnight”
      “Run To The Hills”
      3) As if the above were not enough, you will receive an additional 50 minutes live footage from the 1985 Maiden's appearance at the Rock in Rio festival. “Scream for me, Brazil!” The image quality was not repaired (by today's standards) for this, but the sound is pretty good.
      “Aces High”
      “2 Minutes to Midnight”
      “The Trooper”
      “Revelations”
      “Slave Power”
      “Iron Maiden”
      “Run To The Hills”
      “Running Free”
The good news is that if you wan't a high quality A / V-Rock in Rio by Maiden, have it with the excellent 2002 Rock In Rio DVD.
      4) Finally, you will receive additional 49 minutes with the order:
      – ” 'Ello Texas” – These songs (3 total), different time. From 1983's piece of World Tour'22 … Acacia Avenue, “” Flight of Icaris “and” Iron Maiden “.
      – videos for “Aces High” and “2 Minutes to Midnight”.
      – A 20-minute photo-gallery tour.
How could all the Iron Maiden fan pass on this issue. Simple … a real Iron Maiden fan can not pass on this. I predict that in conjunction with of the 2008 Iron Maiden “Somewhere Back in Time” World Tour, the boys to take up an issue and have it on DVD next year with the three-part story. Let's hope the next DVD-switch, that some of the classics that we have so few great tunes such as murders in the Rue Morgue, Where Eagles Dare, Killers, Die With Your Boots, and so on and so on.

    I have the original!!!!!!!
If this video is just like the original but the volume level is at what today’s standards are for surround sound, this video is awesome.

  7. Abie says:

… it could have been better.
I will not have much time to speak of all the fantastic things about this video, because everyone already knows how much this classic concert film. 2 things I would like to point out that I really like about the DVD version are:
      – The 5.1-sound is super. Generally I prefer the stereo track on DVD concert videos, but this is an exception. The 5.1 mix is much better than the stereo mix on this release
      – All of the bonus material on Disc 2 is great, and a lot of fun to see for the first time.
now, why I give him 4 stars instead of 5:
      – I was really hoping that they would restore the video quality for the DVD version. It looks like it was ported from a slightly faded, grainy VHS tape. With that said, I'm just on a large 52 “TV and can do more, from which the limitations of the video as a small TV.
also, as a note, the video preview at Amazon clearly shows the LAD concert footage in a widescreen format. The LAD-concert is actually in 4:3 format and not 16:9 as in the preview. This is probably a good thing, though, as that would have to 16:9 in the cultivation of the original aspect ratio.
Although I think they would have a much better job cleaning the original image quality, this is still a must for your DVD concert DVD collection. After all these years, it is still very high on the list as one of the best heavy metal concerts ever caught on tape.

What a “definitive” DVD SHOULD be!
I won’t go into details, as it’s been stated here already, BUT, this is truly everything a fan could want in a definitive release.
