Mastodon – Blood Mountain Reviews

Blood Mountain

You could have passed it off as a fluke. Remission was an awesome album, helping revitalize metal and bringing the band much deserved notice. Leviathan was a gigantic leap, perhaps the most ambitious metal album in years. But could it keep going? People were concerned–-side glances were given, hand wringing began as Mastodon moved to a major. And for what? Turns out for nothing. Blood Mountain is flat-out amazing. If anything, it is another leap forward, both experimentaly (more…)

    Unrelenting intesitiy meets masterful craftsmanship
In the arms race that is metal, bands are constantly trying to out “heavy” each other. The result of this sonic brinksmanship is usually sloppy guitar work, played through…

Mastodon compared to typical metal (Avenged Sevenfold, HIM, Lacuna Coil) is like comparing Miles Davis to Kenny G. Yes, you can find it filed under “Jazz” but each is a unique animal. Some call the genre “thinking of the human metal”, I prefer to see it as a rock band is not ready to adapt to the vagaries of the middle-aged suits or seek the glare of celebrity. This is made of metal with a work ethic that is not beautiful and not for the faint of heart or weak of mind. If you believe that you are up to, then welcome to Blood Mountain.

One of the greatest albums ever!
Blood Mountain is amazing! It’s a conceptual album the tells the story of a hero who is in search of a Crystal Skull which he must place on top of Blood Mountain.

    Awesome CD
One of the best metal albums I have bought in a few years, totally non commercial, not poppy, metal at it’s finest.

    So ……..
In not really a header on all over (was in my teenage years), but I really enjoy any kind of music, as long as it is …. ….. also good.
Back in 2001 I saw another of my favorite bands … A small band known as Clutch. Opening for them was another band I had never heard of …. known as you guessed it! .. Mastodon. I was impressed with the musicality, but not the tattooed metal hairbanging with the masturbatory guitar solos.
      I was wrong.
So after hearing remission (1st album) I thought .. “Man this stuff is a little too heavy for me anymore. Leviathan (2nd album) I think this is perhaps one of the best metal records I've ever heard. I immediately enjoyed the complexity of the music. The whole album losely revolved around the story of Moby Dick.
Now Blood Mountain … .. So the new Mastodon has a lot to have in comparison to their last album (I know this is not fair). It is really an incredible experience. The complexity of the music is crazy. Normal metal, such as Kenny G. .. Mastodon is like John Coltrane.
What I am trying to say, after all the BS If you have an open spirit of the music from different genres .. Pick it up .. Now.

Best Metal Album Since Master of Puppets
This album is so incredible. If you love mid-80’s Metallica and Slayer, you’ll love this.

Mastodon comes with this. One of the best (if not the best) metal album of the 21st Century. Better than Remission and Leviathan, Mastodon have really outdone themselves this time around. Brann the drums never sounded better, the band as a whole has never been so tight.
These guys are the real deal, too bad that they do not get even a fraction of the recognition they deserve.

    Great album, terrible mastering
Why, oh why, does the “Loudness War” even exist? For those not in the know, music has been mastered louder and louder ever since the 90s.

    Well Done
These boys hit a home run with Leviathan, and they come back to answer that with this eminent piece of work. Outstanding.

…..just when they say rock is dead…..
Amazing…all I can really say about these guys. I first saw them with Slayer and Killswitch Engage in Atlanta. They stole the show.

    Metal’s saviours
This is easily the most interesting hard rock release I have heard in the last two years. Along with Down, this band is truly carrying the flag for all the metalheads who aren’t…

Call it what you want… this simply RULES!!!
Mastodon, at least on Blood Mountain, is all over the place stylistically. At times sludgy and doomy, frequently thrashy, and more often melodic with tinges of progressive…

The only album I listen to from beginning to end
This is only album I own, have ever owned, that I put in and play every track with regularity.
