Back in Black Reviews (by AC/DC)

May 15, 2009

Back in Black

essential recording
Most critics complain Back in Black, the album AC/DC recorded after the death of their original lead screamer Bon Scott, is ridiculously juvenile, obvious, snickering, bludgeoning, derivative, single-minded about sex and booze, a big cartoon. All true, of course, and–on rock ‘n’ ragers like “What Do You Do For Money Honey,” “You Shook Me All Night Long,” and the title track–all great. As Scott’s replacement Brian Johnson reminds us, loud and crunchy, no-holds- (more…)

Death Magic Doom

People were concerned–-side glances were given, hand wringing began as Mastodon moved to a major. And for what? Turns out for nothing. Blood Mountain is flat-out amazing. If anything, it is another leap forward, both experimentaly (more…)

Johnny Got His Gun (1971) Reviews

Johnny Got His Gun

Review
Johnny Got His Gun is one of the most emotionally devastating films you’re likely to see. You won’t soon forget it, and that’s either going to spur you on to some useful introspection or drive you a little mad. That’s the sign of masterful writing, and Trumbo’s singular achievement. –DVD Talk, April 17th 2009
