With the aim of using music to send political messages against social injustice, System of a Down is a four-piece hard rock band composed of grandsons of Armenian genocide survivors. A range of rather outspoken views dominates their music, which is highly prominent throughout their songs. After the release of five albums, the group has enjoyed commercial success with an array of popular singles, including “Chop Suey.” The band is also part of the Axis of Justice, a non-profit organization that fights for social and political change.
Background Information
Originating from Los Angeles, California, System of a Down has produced numerous alternative metal, heavy metal, hard rock, experimental rock, alternative rock, and nu metal singles and albums under labels such as American Recordings and Columbia Records. A variety of musical influences have helped shape the style and sound of the band, including punk rock, jazz, fusion, blues, and Armenian folk music. During performances, the band uses an array of instruments, such as electric mandolins and sitars, to deliver a unique sound. As for the writing of their music, various band members state they gain inspiration from the likes of the Beatles and KISS.
Current Members
The current members of System of a Down have been with the group since its start. Serj Tankian is responsible for lead vocals and also plays keyboard and rhythm guitar. Daron Malakian contributes to the vocals and plays lead guitar. The bass guitar and backing vocals are attached to Shavo Odadjian, while John Dolmayan plays the drums and also adds to backing vocals. Former System of the Down drummer, Andy Khachaturian played with the group from 1995 to 1997 until he was forced to leave the band after a hand injury followed the group’s third demo.
Brief Career History
Some of the original members of System of a Down belonged to a band called Soil. From 1993 to 1995, the group only held one live show and one jam session recording before splitting up. Serj Tankian and Daron Malakian went on to form a new band called System of a Down, a name that originated from a poem Malakian wrote entitled “Victims of a Down.”
The two members then called upon Shavo Odadjian for assistance, as he originally held the position of band manager and promoter. Soon after, he was given the opportunity to become the permanent bassist. It was at this time that Velvet Hammer Music took over the managerial responsibilities. Their first release was titled “Sugar.” Soon after, drummer Andy Khachaturian joined the band but was replaced in 1997 by John Dolmayan.
After catching the eye of Rick Rubin, System of a Down signed with American Columbia records and released their self-titled debut album during the summer of 1998. Mainstream success soon followed, which dominated the early 21st century. Currently, the band is on hiatus, as group members take on outside projects.
Discography & Musical Achievements
The System of a Down released three single albums (“System of a Down,” “Toxicity,” and “Steal This Album”) and a double album entitled “Mesmerize and Hypnotize.” When “System of a Down” was released in 1998, the album later reached platinum status. In 2001, “Toxicity” was released, achieving the number-one position in the United States and Canadian music charts. The album reached three-time platinum in sales and was also well-liked in the United Kingdom and Australia.
“Steal This Album” reached platinum status and was released in 2002. In the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom, their double album (“Mesmerize and Hypnotize”) reached number on the music charts, once again selling more than a million copies each. A host of singles also ranked on the U.S. modern rock and other mainstream charts, such as “Chop Suey” (2001); “Aerials” (2002); “Toxicity” (2002); “B.Y.O.B.” (2005); and “Hypnotize” (2005).

A clear statement of the goals to be reached should preface any approach to the study of singing. The single most important purpose in the training of a singing voice should be to develop or make possible the development of the utmost potential of that voice.
The ultimate goal to be reached is the ability to sing the literature for a particular type of voice – soprano, mezzo, or contralto; tenor, baritone or bass.
Vocal literature in itself sets up the goals or objectives for the singer to reach: quality, diction, agility, dynamic control, range, interpretation and style, and good vocal condition.
The technical goals or objectives involved in singing are as follows:
Normal quality – a ringing, resonant tone with a “cover” of beauty and a “metal” or point which carries or projects.
A diction that is understandable without sacrificing quality.
Agility – the ability to sing rapid and florid passages and difficult intervals.
Dynamic control – the ability to sing three gradations of loudness: pianissimo, mezzo piano, or mezzo forte or forte; and the ability to sing the messa di voce, from soft to loud and back to soft again through at least the lower three fourths of the singing range.
Range – the ability to sing approximately two octaves’ range above the average normal pitch of the speaking voice.
Interpretation – the ability to change from the normal quality to other qualities for emotional effect.
Vocal hygiene – a technique of singing that not only tends to keep the voice in good condition but also tends to develop the voice to greater possibilities.
The goals and objectives are usually taken for granted, and yet they can be used as a measuring stick for a student’s progress. Singing teachers hardly ever mention them. Most students when asked, “WHY are you studying singing?” can seldom give a straightforward answer.
There are other goals or objectives that one can list in addition to the literature and the technical goals.
Usually students of singing are interested in fields of singing, such as radio, church, concert, light opera, opera, and television, before they know where they will fit in vocally. In some instances, radio, for example, a vocal coach would be more helpful.
Many people are interested in singing for the enjoyment singing gives them. Many of these pride themselves on the fact that they just sing and know nothing about the technique of singing or how to read vocal music and don’t want to know.
Others take singing lessons to improve their speaking voices, or to develop self confidence and poise, or for a keener appreciation of the art of singing and singers and of music in general.
The study of singing is thought by many to improve not only physical health by the practice of deep breathing, but also mental health by the emotional release and enjoyment singing affords; to strengthen and quicken the mental processes; to bring about good posture; and to develop personality. Perhaps the practice of singing should do all of these things, but there is considerable question whether it does, unless a relationship is brought out between singing and these objectives.
The singing teacher can easily justify his work as a singing teacher on emotional, mental, physical and personality grounds, but usually his approach is an artistic one. To some teachers, singing is an art and not a science; to others if is predominantly a science; and to still others, it is both an art and a science.
The modern singing teacher, if he is to keep step with the advances and discoveries in all fields related to singing and the teaching of singing, must combine the artistic and the scientific approaches. He must also suggest goals and objectives, such as those suggested above, for his singing student.

Wall decors come in many kinds. Traditional ones include sculptures, emblems, beautiful paintings, or mosaics. A more contemporary home may have a colorful, artful display of lights projected into the wall.
However, there are other kinds of wall decors that are less than traditional. We’ve seen an entire wall as an aquarium, for example, with lots of colorful fish swimming in it. One of the most unusual wall decors is the singing fish, which has gained popularity in the United States. A singing fish looks like a large stuffed bass or a trout mounted on a wall plaque. When someone walks near it, it starts to wriggle, swing its head out, and lip syncs to a popular pre-recorded song, a clip that is usually thirty seconds long. For many viewers, it will come out as a funny surprise.
Singing fishes are now a fad in the country, available in mall stores, in a flea market, on television, or in the Internet. Sales are quite high that many stores often run out of stock to sell.
It might look like a ridiculous nautical wall d
There are singers who possess the talent to write songs, do great on live shows or through auditions, can sing in harmony with a band, and can create great singing without general music. But Scream singing sometimes looks like a noise to many people. The process of scream singing is a complicated one as it requires screaming in a proper manner, especially if you are dealing with a death metal singing.
It is important to know the right techniques to learn scream singing. It should be kept under consideration that screams singing can be achieved properly by practicing it regularly. You should experiment new things on your voice as this will help you to acknowledge your singing limits. Also, by adopting different warming up methods will enable you to find the one that suits your voice perfectly. Learn all the things about your voice as this is important for your success as a professional singer. The following guidelines will help you to become a professional singer in scream singing.
1) You should have patience to learn to scream singing properly. You cannot be a good scream singer overnight.
2) It would take a good length of time to perfect it. If you are being impatient and are screaming beyond your capability, it will be of no help to you. Rather, it would lead to serious vocal chord damage.
3) In scream singing, if you are trying to use all air immediately, it will result in hurting.
4) Remember that excess of everything is bad.
5) Get familiar with head resonance, if you are planning to learn scream singing.
The knowledge of singing bowl production would have spread throughout Asia along established trade routes. Many believe that the Buddha, Padmasambhava, crossed the Himalaya mountains from India into Tibet. He bought the teachings of the Buddha into the country and also the knowledge of singing bowls. Contrary to popular belief, singing bowls were not used during any religious practices but were used instead as begging bowls and for food. During this period monasteries only used the singing bowl as a chalice.
If the singing bowl was not produced for religious practice then the obvious question is: what were they used for? There are accounts of travelling smiths who would make the bowls with materials gathered during their travels. Other theories suggest it was the monks themselves that produced the bowls. If so though, why were they used for eating and not meditation? What was the reason for having the bowls ’sing’? The fact is no one can be entirely sure who produced the earliest singing bowls as there is no concrete evidence to support either theory.
Ancient singing bowls were traditionally made of seven various metals, each one symbolising a different planet in the solar system. The sound produced by the singing bowls would vary depending upon how the different quantities of metals were mixed together. The metals would be combined to form an alloy which would be left to cool before being beaten into the familiar bowl shape. However, each of these ancient bowls varies and can have more or less than the seven traditionally used metals. This would support the theories that it was the travelling smiths who produced the bowls as, during their travels, not all the metals would have been available which explains why each bowl might be of a different composition.

Scream singing may seem like noise to some, but it is really a very complicated process. If you are into death metal singing, you need to learn to scream properly.
The first key to scream singing properly is to be patient. It can’t be done overnight. It can take months or even years to perfect. Don’t become impatient and scream more than you are capable of. You could seriously damage your vocal chords doing that. Also, when you do scream singing, don’t use all of your air up at once. It will hurt. Remember that everything is good, in moderation.
You should also learn about head resonance, before you learn to scream. Melissa Cross uses a good method for that. She recommends that you put a pencil in your mouth and then sing both over and under it. That should give you a good example of head resonance.
You should also learn to scream nasally, when you are scream singing. That basically means that you should picture the sound coming out your nose. This is a healthier and easier option than singing from deep in your throat. You can also add small “yeh” sounds to vowels that are within words, as you learn to scream properly. That can help you to achieve a comfortable scream sound.
If you are skilled at death metal singing, it can also be a big help. Death metal singing is a good precursor to learning to scream sing properly.
Also, remember that a good singing warm up goes a long way. Treat scream singing as an athletic event. All athletes both warm up and cool down, if they are smart. You should do the same, by practicing some basic vocal exercises, such as scales, before you perform.
Vocal strain is no laughing matter, so if anything hurts, when you are scream singing, stop! Rest for a while. In fact, if your voice feels strained you should not talk at all for a while. However, if you must talk, don’t make the mistake of whispering, as many people do. All that does is block off your vocal chords and cause more damage. Use your normal speaking voice if you absolutely need to.
Learn to scream best by staying well hydrated. Drink plenty of water. Also, before a performance, you can drink cola, since it coats your throat and causes better reverberation. If you really don’t want plain water, you can try some diluted squash juice for more flavors. However, water is really a better option. Staying well hydrated can improve your scream singing voice, as well as your general health.
In Melissa Cross’s DVD, The Zen of Screaming, she explains that supporting your diaphragm is also important, during scream singing. You need balanced air pressure. Otherwise, your performance will suffer.
So follow these simple scream singing tips, if you want to learn to scream properly. Whether you do death metal singing or any other sort, proper screaming is important. You should be able to enjoy scream singing safely, after all.
Ok my friend is putting together a band. Now I am needing to learn to well sing. I am relatively sucky at singing, but I am trying to find a way to sing better. Is it true practice makes perfect, even in singing? I am trying to learn how to scream. I am trying to get good by at least March, I want to surprise everyone, by the fact that I can (well will) be able to sing. I just need some advice on how to get my voice singing material.
