just to name a few, of course it all depends on what we call “modern”, as in present day, or something that contemporary, those mentioned above would fit the first sense, but something that very “contemporary” very “experimental” you’d have to consider bands like
Cynic,
Anata,
The faceless
Daath (the hindereders, and futility)
Gordian knot
spastic ink
blotted science, (anything with Ron Jarzombek really)
Augury
really anything that really brings something forward, that really re-defines the whole concept of that genre music, thats just to mention a few of my favorites, i know i left many many out
first off, if you think these bands are metal:bullet for my valentine, linkin park, rise against or shinedown are even close to metal
YOU”RE A TOTAL DIPSH*T!!!!!!

At The Gates

That’s Metal. I know people are gonna say that those other bands are metal but really… they’re not at all. That’s what fans of true metal call “pop metal”
Basically guys who don’t have the skill level that it takes to be in a true heavy metal band start pop metal bands. Such crap.
Wow… Linkin Park was never metal dude. Rap rock at its finest though. At least it was. Try Lamb of God or if your not that into screaming maybe Avenged Sevenfold or Disturbed. Also give a look to Demon Hunter. They are good. And if your into Swedish melo-deth, try Scar Symmetry.
@Dave: Bullet For My Valentine has thrash metal elements. Doesn’t make them good in any way, but there’s no denying they’ve been listening to a lot of 80s metal.
Best modern metal:
In Flames (always blending modern sounds with classic riffage)
August Burns Red (best breakdownage around, also refreshing metalcore)
Deftones (dystopic and atmospheric, what’s not to love?)
Misery Signals (best hardcore influenced metal around, no competition here)
Caliban (great popish metal, more interesting than Killswitch Engage)
Between the Buried and Me (they blend everything, are technically proficient and fun to listen to)
Cult of Luna (seriously heavy tundracore or whatever…give ‘em a listen, ISIS is dead, so they don’t make this list)
Meshuggah (timesignaturecore at its best, seriously heavy guitar riffage)
Protest the Hero (ridiculously fun band)
Mastodon (clever songwriting, intriguing concepts, pure love)
Plenty of other good bands out there, but these 10 top the bill for consistent awesomeness. Other ridiculously underrated bands are: Conducting From the Grave, Within the Ruins, Circle of Contempt, Born of Osiris, Becoming the Archetype, Anterior, It Prevails, Poison the Well, Textures, This or the Apocalypse, The Crimson Armada etc etc…
Half of those people said arent true heavy metal they are like Screamo/Hard Rock/Death Metal/I-dont-give-a-crap-what-its-really-called-its-not-heavy-metal
According to Wikipedia there are no modern heavy metals, because I think the newest of the heavy metal band was back from 80’s so we can’t call that modern.
Now most of the mentioned above where actually metal, it’s just that they are a sub genre of heavy metal.
And they are known as Metalcore bands such as:
Bullet for My Valentine
Killswitch Engage,
All That Remains,
Shadows Fall,
Unearth,
Trivium,
Bleeding Through
Atreyu
The Devil Wears Prada
Aside from metalcore we also have a genre known as nu metal and to name a few:
4Lyn
Crazy Town
Disturbed
Drowning Pool
Godsmack
Korn
Limp Bizkit
Linkin Park
POD
Rage Against the Machine
Slipknot
System of a Down
Thousand Foot Krutch
My favorite of course is heavy metal but there are no modern bands on it so i can’t suggest any but if you’re looking for a realistic modern heavy metal sound i recommend:
Darkness album Permission to Land on 2003.
Jun, what the fuck are you talking about, no heavy metal modern bands ??
Go listen to Evile, tell me they aren’t heavy metal. Same with Anonymus.
Oh and the Darkness’ album Permission to land was sure a good album from a good band, but sounded nowhere near heavy metal. Rock N’ Roll or hard Rock, yes, heavy metal, hell no.
Haste The Day
August Burns Red
Killswitch Engage
The Devil Wears Prada
Threat Signal
Whitechapel (although i’d consider them more deathcore)
A Day To Remember has some pretty good songs
All That Remains
As I Lay Dying
Blessthefall
Demon Hunter
It Dies Today
Mastodon
Of Mice & Men
Shadows Fall
Terror
Theres plenty other bands but thats a good amount i’d say.
