What Are The Best Progressive Metal Bands?

I am a classical musician and I like all kinds of music except for the extra loud type. But a friend of mind told me about progressive metal and that its quite musical enough not to irritate the ears of a classical musician, and so I’m willing to look into it. What bands are there of this genre that will not repel me upon first hearing, considering my condition?

Dream Theater [Might be too heavy for you]
    Rush
    Pink Floyd
Mars Volta [might be too heavy]
    Il Bacio Della Medusa
    Tartar Lamb
agree with below, Opeth is awesome once you get into their music. Like he said below start with Damnation if you are curious. After that try out Blackwater Park :>

In my personal opinion Meshuggah are THE best ‘progressive’ metal band around but as mentioned before my be a bit to heavy for you at the moment. Mastadon are also worth a listen though not 100% prog metal though do have a big element of it in their music. Though again may be a little on the heavy side for you at the minute.
I think a great place for you to start would be Tool. One of the best bands on the planet and they probably do one of, if not THE, greatest live show on earth.
If its ‘interesting’ music your seeking American Head Charge use very irregular and odd timing. Again, maybe a little heavy for you at the moment but interesting and skilled none the less. Also for pure musical talent Sikth are (where) an amazingly talented band musically and had a completely unique sound. One of my favourite bands. Just a shame they split. *sob*

Listen to it all, lifes too short to pick and choose. Metal and classical music have been very similar in my experience, the louder the music the more passionate the author/composer. Get into it brother, welcome.
Can recommend Heaven and Hell and Mob Rules by Black Sabbath.

You should give an example of two of some bands you like. But um, you could try slipknot, the devil wears prada, and system of a down.

Try Evergrey, Symphony X, and Avenged Sevenfold(really strange timing and choruses).
