first of all welcome to the world of heavy metal! It’s exciting and if you don’t overdoit by believeing every extremity you see or hear it’s great music. Okay, since you’re new to this, I will suggest that you go back a couple of decades to the classic heavy bands that started all this, then work your way to this era. So the best true heavy bands of the late 70’s- beginning of the 80’s were:

Now for the best bands from all time, that would have to go into categories as after the mid 80’s the bands differentiated the style of metal each prefered to write such as Speed metal, Thrash metal (and later on Death metal), Doom Metal, Black metal etc. As an indication some of the best bands are:
thrash metal: SLAYER – METALLICA – EXODUS – KREATOR – SODOM – TESTAMENT – SEPULTURA – MEGADETH – ANTHRAX (earlier) – SACRED REICH – DEATH ANGEL
death metal: MORBID ANGEL – DEICIDE – DEATH – CELTIC FROST
power metal: ANGRA – STRATOVARIUS – RHAPSODY – HELLOWEEN
black metal: IMMORTAL – IMPALED NAZARENE – DARK THRONE – DIMMU BORGIR – CRADLE OF FILTH
nu metal (as a personal opinion here: these bands have nothing to do with good old true metal): White Zombie – Machinehead – Limp Bizkit – Pantera – Korn

Judas Priest. In 90 they did a killer remake of Johnny B. Goode. Rob Halford’s vocals are 2nd to none.
Quiet Riot is always worth a good head banging.

But also watch some movies that have metal songs so you can see what you like, then go to amazon.com, find the cd you are looking for, and see what they say people that bought that cd also buy.

This is fun, I googled “best power metal bands” and got here… xD
Anyway… I’m kind of “discovering” metal myself, been an ocassional listener to this music for a few years, but never really quite exploring the diversity it has to offer…
Now with the i-net and downloadable mp3’s it’s a heck easier… (use Soulseek !!)
The first thing you have to know is that heavy metal is VAST… you really need loads of time. These ain’t pop songs, each genre, band and album is a different experience… Forget about “hits” “number one’s” or any kind of pop rubbish…
So you really need lots of time to listen to full albums… The first thing you should be aware of are the existence of genres. I’m not an expert but these could be:
- Heavy Metal “precursors”: Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, etc.
- Classic Heavy Metal: Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, etc.
- Trash: Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, etc.
- Doom (not familiar with the genre yet)
- Black (not familiar with the genre yet)
- Death (not familiar, but this is the “growling” kind of metal music)
- Neo-classical: Yngwie Malmsteen
- Progressive: Dream Theatre, Opeth, etc.
- Symphonic: Therion, Epica, etc.
- Power Metal: Angra, DragonForce, Gamma Ray, HammerFall, Helloween, Rhapsody of Fire, Stratovarius, etc.
There are many others of course (gothic, speed, viking, nu metal, etc.)
If you’ve only heard those 3 (Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, ACDC) I guess Metallica is a MUST… especially the first 3 albums (the newer albums are rubbish).

Just listen Avenged Sevenfold,it’s the best modern metal band out there.
And they’re different than others!
Lyrics,beats,notes,melodies are composed perfectly before they start to record em.
Oh!i forgot something,
-the first and second album from Avenged Sevenfold are Thrash Metal,
-the third,forth and fifth(maybe sixth) are heavy metal,hard rock,and rock.
Death – Gods of Death Metal original brutal and legendary you cant top these guys RIP Chuck
Venom – Gods OF FUCKING BLACK METAL…though there actually thrash but still creators of black metal
Megadeth old school but fucking bad ass i believe these guys where over shadowed by iron maiden and metallica no one really gave them a chance even though they had way
better songs than both of those bands combined
Kreator – there awesome like them better than slayer
now if your looking for the more morbid bands
Necrophagist-there guitars are crazy these guys have so much talent
Vehemence- i just like these guys not many people like them haha
and if your in to black metal
Immortal- legends in the black metal buiznes
Dark Funeral, Dark Throne , Gorgoroth and Nattafrost these guys are great
