Power chords give very ambiguous tonalities to music. In heavy metal and hardcore rock music, it’s good to omit the 3rd to give the guitar riff more motion.
Since the 3rd of any chord has resolution tendencies, it can be omitted, so songs like “Smoke on The Water” by Deep Purple can sound great by writing a cool bass line and following it in power chords.
I would definitely suggest using power chords in writing metal. It’s an awesome way to realize that powerful sound.
Of course, they don’t call them power chords for nothin’.

Its an easy way to bring the whole band in together and to close a song off while keeping it tight.
